My Bio

Country Boy to the Big City

Jerry “JJ” Jones, Jr., originally from Groesbeck, Texas, is an accomplished musician, producer, and educator with more than 30 years of musical experience. Raised in a musically gifted family, he began playing guitar at the age of 10 under the guidance of his late uncle, Charlie Jones, Sr., and later expanded his talents to piano, bass, organ, and drums.

Although rooted in gospel music, JJ developed a deep appreciation for jazz during his high school years, drawing inspiration from legendary artists including Wes Montgomery, Norman Brown, George Benson, and many others. His musical direction continued to evolve while studying at McLennan Community College under the mentorship of the late Professor Ken Frazier.

JJ earned an Associate of Arts in Transfer Music from MCC and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Marketing from the University of Texas at San Antonio. As a dedicated music educator, he has inspired students in diverse learning environments for more than three decades. He firmly believes in the transformative power of music education, often saying, “Music education preserves the dying arts.”

Now based in San Antonio, Texas, JJ performs as both a contemporary jazz artist and church musician. Throughout his career, he has shared the stage with respected local and national artists, including Kirk Whalum, Walter Beasley, Althea Rene, Tom Braxton, Gerald Veasley, and Greg Manning.

He has also performed at renowned events such as the Greater Hartford Jazz Festival (Hartford, CT), the Texas Jazz Festival (Corpus Christi, TX), the Women in Jazz Festival (Austin, TX), and the Balcones Heights Jazz Festival (San Antonio, TX), as well as numerous concerts, private events, cruises, and community performances throughout the region. These appearances have allowed him to connect with diverse audiences while showcasing his signature blend of contemporary jazz, soulful expression, and exceptional musicianship.

On March 20, 2025, JJ fulfilled a lifelong dream with the release of his debut contemporary jazz single, “From the Inside Out.” He is currently working on a five-song EP featuring original compositions written during his college years. The project revisits the music that helped shape his artistic voice, blending fresh contemporary jazz arrangements with the passion and creativity that inspired him as a young musician.

Through his artistry, Jerry “JJ” Jones, Jr. continues to inspire listeners with music that speaks to the heart and moves the soul. Whether performing live, recording new material, or mentoring the next generation of musicians, he remains committed to sharing music that uplifts, encourages, and brings people together.

Jerry’s mission is simple: to bring music from the heart to the listener’s ears.
